Description

The Blue Oak is a fascinating historical account of the birth and development of the central Sacramento Valley from the time when native Americans were the only human inhabitants, to the early 1900s when the region matured into an important agricultural center in the state of California. Through the eyes of the early Maidu Indians, The Blue Oak begins when the region was virgin wilderness dominated by wetlands, rivers and prairies, roaming bear and elk, and rumors of early explorers arriving many miles away along the California coast. The establishment of the first Spanish missions, Sutter's Fort and Hock Farm, and subsequent Mexican land grants in the Valley is chronicled with factual descriptions and detailed maps of the region in the early 1800s. Following the discovery of gold in 1849, the explosive growth that followed is illustrated with early gold-rush transportation fliers and maps of the gold-rush settlements of the 1850s. In the wake of the Gold Rush, the central valley transitioned into an important agricultural center, first with small vineyards and orchards, and then with multi-thousand-acre wheat farms that covered the land in the late 1800s. The book ends in the early 1900s when the huge wheat farms were planted to the fruit and nut orchards that dominate much of the valley's landscape to this day. Rich in historical detail, with an extensive bibliography, the book contains over 35 early drawings, photographs, and specially constructed maps that allow the reader to appreciate the region's development from its first inhabitants up through the early 1900s.
