Alphonse Louis Constant (1810-75), a.k.a. Éliphas Lévi, is considered one of the most important esoteric writers of all time. As a young man, he trained for the Catholic priesthood, but he dropped out of seminary to dabble in socialist movements. He was imprisoned several times for his political writings, and he gradually turned to more religious and occult subject matter. Under the name Éliphas Lévi he produced books like "Dogma and Ritual of Transcendental Magic" and "The History of Magic". In these books he provided clear, and often rationalistic explanations of occult practices and phenomena. In this final book, written shortly before his death in 1875, Lévi expounds his religious philosophy, marries science and faith, interpreting the symbols behind the stories, to found a rational and universal religion, to enable peace and harmony on earth. His ideas are a blending of ancient wisdom and modern ideas where hierarchy, order and obedience go hand in hand with equality, individualism, and freedom. This "Catechism" is a manual pointing the way to peace in all parts of human life: in the individual conscience, in marriage and family life, in society, in the nation, and internationally. This is the first English translation of a fascinating and largely forgotten thinker of the 19th century. This book also includes a shorter work written two years earlier, "The Religion of Science", a metaphysical exposition of the nature of God and the destiny of the universe.
