In 1904, a small upstate New York newspaper published a series of articles written by William T. Levey, a Civil War veteran who had served with the 134th New York Volunteer Infantry. Levey's memoir of his wartime service was very well received at the time, and the newspaper articles were collected and published in 1904 in extremely limited edition by Roy Burton Myers as The Blue and the Gray: A Sketch of Soldier Life in the Army of the Civil War. Thanks to the Northshire Press, Levey's memoir of Civil War service is available once again with an introduction and research notes prepared by Civil War historian William F. Howard and a foreword by Harold Holzer, author of Lincoln President-Elect: Abraham Lincoln and the Great Secession Winter 1860-1861 While thousands of Civil War soldier memoirs have been published since the war ended in 1865, Levey's is one of the best in providing the flavor of what it was like to serve as a common soldier in the Union Army during the Civil War. It is a book to be savored; nothing comes closer to sitting at the knee of an old Civil War veteran and listening to the colorful stories of his service in camp and field. About the Editor William F. Howard is a graduate of the University of Albany Graduate School of Public Affairs, where he was a Herbert Lehman Fellow, and Manhattanville College. He has edited and provided introductions for several Civil War books and is the author of "The Leesburg Affair" The Battle at Ball's Bluff (1994). Howard is a member of the New York State Archives Partnership Trust Board and served as Chairman of the New York State Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Commission from 2006 to 2008.
