Born in eastern India on October 17, 1936, he is the older of two children of Paritosh and Uma Chatterjee. He began writing poetry in Bengali from a very early age, and published poems in well-known Bengali literary journals by the late 1950¿s. After moving to the U.S. in 1959, he earned a master¿s degree in social work, another master¿s degree in sociology, and a Ph.D. in sociology from The University of Chicago. In 1967 he was appointed to a faculty position at Case Western Reserve University, and later he became the Grace Longwell Coyle Professor there until his retirement in 2008. Professionally, he is the author of many books and journal articles. He is the father of two children: Manu Chatterjee and Sraboni Chatterjee.
