Description

In my dissertation, The Comic Symptom of Capital: Humor, Critique, and Eighteenth-Century Sentimentality, I explore the representation of forms of commerce that for the first time were imagined as a separate field of practice, a set of transactions that came to be called "the economy." Focusing in particular on financial images in sentimental comedy and aesthetic theory, and on the use of humor to describe bourgeois exchange, I link questions about changing financial metaphors with changes in the aesthetic imaginary of the eighteenth century. Conceiving these economic figures, I argue, helped to define the contours of a practice of critique, versions of which we still find in the university today. In the eighteenth century, as "the economy" begins to appear to be an autonomous sphere of practice, critique is authorized as similarly self-regulating. The question is not whether this analogy holds--my dissertation looks at the many intricacies and failures of this association--but rather what kinds of tropological moves are made to conceptualize the work of the humanities. The study of eighteenth-century economic tropes thus helps to develop a genealogy of critique, an analysis that finds itself in the flux of figures from different moments in history.
