The original edition of this massive undertaking is of the greatest scarcity and not present in most major libraries. 'There are no three volumes anywhere in economic history with more research behind them' wrote John Clapham in 1940. That so little additional information has subsequently come to light is evidence that this remains a landmark work, unsurpassed in the 80 years since its original publication. Following an account of the general evolution of the joint-stock company in its relation to a full narrative of the financial and commercial history of Great Britain and Ireland from the sixteenth century to 1720 (volume one), the information contained in the appendices (volumes two and three) is so complete that nearly all Scott's facts and conclusions are as fresh and secure today as they were when first published. Besides the account of each one of some dozen of the greater companies, there are studies of all the hundreds of smaller or less conspicuous companies, many of which were utterly forgotten until Scott brought them to life again with an abundance of statistical information collected from the widest possible search into manuscript and obscure printed records. William Robert Scott was the Adam Smith Professor of Political Economy in Glasgow from 1915 until his death in 1940.
