An Omnibus of Dime Novels from the Nineteenth Century. Once avidly devoured by youth across the States, these short novels are home to one of the greatest heroes in American literature, though his thrilling exploits are now sadly largely lost to time. Once upon a time, the adventures of Deadwood Dick, outlaw and Prince of the Road, were read by millions of boys, who awaited his next adventure hungrily. Originally published as weekly dime novels, these short novels are now being republished in a series of volumes, each containing 4 or 5 works by Edward L. Wheeler. Now, Wheeler's later novels are presented, many of which have never been republished since their first appearance in the 1880's. The eponymous hero makes an appearance in at least one story in each of these continuing volumes, though quite a few star other characters. This Volume, the 19th in the series, contains the dime novels: Deadwood Dick as a Boy; Or, Why Ned Harris, the New England Farm-lad, Became the Western Prince of the Road. The story of Deadwood Dick's early life, and how events from his youth led to him becoming the Prince of the Road. This tale sets the scene for the events that occur in the first Deadwood Dick tales, explaining why he went west in the first place, and why he took up the Road-Agent business. Yreka Jim, The Gold Gatherer; Or, The Lottery of Life. Introducing another of Edward Wheeler's larger than life characters, the redoubtable Yreka Jim. In this first tale, Yreka Jim is posing as a Road-Agent who haunts the trails around the mining town of Tarpot, dressed in ghostly garb and seemingly bulletproof. He finds himself drawn into the schemes of a pair of villains from his past who are conniving to rob a popular young woman of her inheritance. Nabob Ned; Or, The Secret of Slab City. In Slab City, Nabob Ned schemes to claim the wealth of his former boss, which he holds in trust as an inheritance for a distant heir. When a young woman arrives in town claiming to be the daughter of the old boss, Ned stops at nothing to discredit and remove her, but he reckons without Eagle City Ed. Wildcat Bob, The Boss Bruiser; Or, The Border Bloodhounds. This the only full-length dime novel that Edward Wheeler wrote. When the fiendish Bloodhounds, an evil gang of murderers and robbers, attempt to take over the town of Pompeii, it is up to Wildcat Bob to drive them out and put an end to their plundering ways. Featuring a cast of memorable heroes and villains, a family feud, mistaken identities, wild chases, kidnapping and revenge, this tale has all the elements you come to expect in one of Wheeler's books.
