Once avidly devoured by youth across the States, these short novels are home to one of the greatest heroes in American literature, though his thrilling exploits are now sadly largely lost to time. Once upon a time, the adventures of Deadwood Dick, outlaw and Prince of the Road, were read by millions of boys, who awaited his next adventure hungrily. Originally published as weekly dime novels, these short novels are now being republished in a series of volumes, each containing 4 or 5 works by Edward L. Wheeler. Now, Wheeler's later novels are presented, many of which have not been republished since their first appearance in the 1880's. The eponymous hero makes an appearance in at least one story in each of these continuing volumes, though quite a few star other characters. This Volume, the 20th in the series, contains the dime novels: Yreka Jim's Prize; Or, The Wolves of Wake-Up; Or; Jim The Sport in Wake-Up. When Yreka Jim is captured in the town of Wake-Up and sentenced to hang, he gains his freedom in a most remarkable way, and wins himself an unusual prize in the bargain. But the rough miners of Wake-Up are not happy with his good luck, and there are secrets and conspiracies afoot in the town that threaten his life and liberty. Deadwood Dick Sentenced; Or, The Terrible Vendetta. Deadwood Dick languishes in jail in the town of Nowhere and is sentenced to hang the next day. But there are those in the town who see the Road-Agent's reputation and skills as an opportunity and plan on enlisting him to avenge old wrongs. Cool Kit, The King of Kids; Or, A Villain's Vengeance. When the newsboy Cool Kit starts to investigate the suspicious suicide of a young woman he joins forces with the girl's sister and Detective Yale to uncover and foil a year's old revenge plot. Yreka Jim's Joker; Or, The Rivals of Red Nose. Yreka Jim has travelled from his home in search of a poker game in order to win the money he needs to pay off his mortgage in time. At the town of Red Nose a case of mistaken identity leads Jim into a fight not only for his own life, but for that of his wife as well, whom he thought safe at home. Bicycle Ben; Or, The Lion of Lightning Lode; Or, Yreka Jim's New Role. When the stage is robbed just outside Lightning Lode important documents are stolen, papers that prove the ownership of the local goldmine. It is down to Bicycle Ben, who is on a mission of his own, Kid Glove Kate, and the bullwhacker, Mambrinus Maccaw, to recover the deeds and end the evil ambitions of Nicholas Norris and his allies.
