In the third book of this series, Paul Gregory strives to present a self-possessed, composed face to the world, while in reality he is plunged into despair following the death of his beloved Lily. He depends on the day-to-day routine of running his supperclub, Pal's, as a means to maintain a normal existence. A freak tornado demolishes Pal's overnight and Paul decides to rebuild not in Carbondale with its many reminders of happier times with Lily, but in another locale entirely. He is lured to the New Orleans area, specifically the north shore of Lake Pontchartrain. Connie Ransome, fellow DEA agent and former lover, suggests a visit. Feeling somehow disloyal to the memory of Lily, he prevaricates, but finally agrees, hoping that Connie's cheery presence will help to dispel his prevailing gloom. His dreams are filled with visions of Lily and his failure to prevent her death. Connie, in love with him, tries to keep his spirits up and generally succeeds. Paul's old nemesis, Stephen Meredith, is running from the law; he ends up in New Orleans and decides to settle quietly in his recently acquired walled French Quarter residence. The pleasure he derives from his newly adopted city is enhanced when he meets Madeleine Marigny, whose unworldly ways charm him. In Western Australia, Crystal Meredith is strongly attracted to Mike Blackburn. Initially considering themselves opposites, they delight in finding in each other a great compatibility. On the other side of the world, Connie wavers between celestial happiness and deep depression because of her feelings for Paul. Does he return her love? She is eventually thrilled to think her dreams seem to be coming true. But, she fears, will the specter of Lily always stand between them? As each major character in this novel undergoes a significant sea change of personality, it becomes evident that there are second chances available to even the most unlikely individuals as we learn that leopards can indeed change their spots.
