The Casey Anthony case shocked the nation. There are remarkable similarities between "The Devil's Favorite Sin" and the Casey Anthony trial. An 11 year old boy who lives in the mountains near Harpers Ferry, West Virginia, an hour away from Washington, DC is murdered. He lives with his hill folk family on inherited land they have owned for generations. A rising star Washington Post reporter who had been interviewing and had gained the confidence of the family for a series of articles for which he has received great acclaim is arrested for the murder. The investigation of the crime is conducted by a local "hillbilly" sheriff. He and the reporter duel throughout out the sheriff's investigation and through the trial. The sheriff has his own devils, mostly from his war experiences in Vietnam where he believes he abandoned his Vietnamese wife and his daughter. He struggles greatly with his guilt and his alcoholism, but knows he has done right in his life, starting with sobriety and an epic return to Vietnam to find his wife and daughter. His discoveries in this journey and what happens subsequently changes his whole life. The reporter, Trevor Adderley, a graduate of the Harvard School of Journalism, has a dark history. As a child, his relationship with his mother was deeply dysfunctional. A violent streak develops early in him as a teenage when he discovers he is incapable of remorse. The 11 year old boy, Bobby Grady, who is intellectually precocious, is the only one who perceives the reporter for who he really is. The boy's black social worker, a survivor of the DC ghetto, guides his intellectual progress and considers him a son. His father is an alcoholic angel. The mother, also an alcoholic, is closely tied to the boy and is hateful and vindictive after Bobby is murdered. Another significant character is the reporter's teenage girlfriend who represents a crossroad in his life where he could have turned away from his nefarious path. The trial charging Trevor Adderley with the murder of Bobby Grady and with Aggravated Child Abuse, a death penalty combination, is based solely on circumstantial evidence. There is no apparent DNA evidence, no witnesses. The prosecution case centers on a back hills forensic expert who painstakingly puts together forensic evidence that leads to a stunning conclusion. The theme of morality in journalism is addressed in the characters of the reporter's managing editor, a former civil rights and anti-war activist who sold out to the print establishment, and a beautiful CNN reporter who becomes intricately involved in the case. The conclusion leaves the closing in the hands of the black social worker and ends with the Hebrew word from the Lord's Prayer, "timshel," thou mayst,.. to be good or evil. Vanity is the Devil's favorite sin.________________________________________
