The major objective of this study is to show African-American literature from a transnational perspective and highlight the diverse identities that have developed as a result of this approach. I argue that African-American literature has always been transnational even in its early stages of development in the rural South and it has only become more complex and accepting in its definition of identities as it expands to encompass a broader world. The first chapter begins with the Harlem Renaissance movement and its groundbreaking effects on the image of the 'New Negro'. The second chapter introduces the Civil Rights Movement which transformed the perception of African-Americans that segued into the development of more blended and hybrid characters. The third chapter begins its focus on Nigerian history and politics as it is later used to demonstrate the dilemmas of immigrants and introduce the struggles of the African diaspora. By analyzing three distinct authors from different time periods including Zora Neale Hurston, James Baldwin and Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, I demonstrated that African-American literature is continually growing to recognize wider categories of race, sexuality and gender.
