Is his sword controlled by mysterious forces or is it just that he is a very accomplished swordsman? Was it the strange metal his father made the sword from or was there a connection to the ring he gave him at his investiture? After fighting for his King and his own lands, John knew that he and the sword were a powerful combination. He reflects on his life, back to the time when he became the Squire to Sir Cedric Wymondham and left his father's Smithy to make his way in the world Knights. There were the battles he fought, his rise to becoming a Knight, his marriage to Tania and their children who came from that union. He felt pleased with what he had achieved with his Tenants, making them into a co-operative group, everyone working for the benefit of all. He was not so happy when he reflected on all the men he had killed even if they deserved it. He missed Roger, his friend, second son of the local Knight who ruled their village. His brother inherited the land when their father died, but made such a bad job of it that John ended up taking it from him. The land that John claimed increased it's production of wool and therefor the profits. Life was good and became even better when he organised his own business deal with the Flemish cloth merchants. One episode he did not enjoy was when he was captured by the French and imprisoned. Escaping used all his ingenuity and was not the most comfortable way to exit a prison. As he became older he decided to go to France and try and find the place where his father gained the ring. Standing on that deck, with his wife and eldest son, watching the receding coast of England on his way to France made John think that another adventure was just beginning. Would he be there at the end?
