Description

Prior beliefs may lead to a contradiction between predictions and data that interferes with the ability to draw accurate conclusions. As an extension of research conducted by Greenhoot, Semb, Colombo, and Schreiber (2004), the current study assigned adolescent students and college undergraduates to a read-only, free hands-on, or structured hands-on condition through which they interacted with evidence for two physics experiments involving a ball and ramp. One of the experiments was consistent with most people's prior beliefs, while the other was inconsistent with most people's prior beliefs. Participants' predictions, prediction confidence, experimentation adequacy, conclusions, and generalizable understanding were measured to determine the effects of prior belief bias on drawing correct conclusions as a function of whether participants conduct or read about the experiment. Results indicated that adults are more accurate than adolescents as well as better experimenters. Results also suggest that reading about the experiment, rather than performing the experiment, leads to higher accuracy and generalization skills.
