The purpose of this dissertation was to examine whether daily training logs would promote adaptive changes to correlates of self-regulated behaviour in athletes. This thesis examined the self-motivational benefits that coaches have accorded to training logs, which have never been tested empirically in the naturalistic environment. Using a "bottom-up" approach, a series of studies: (1) established the face validity of activities that represented non-regulation by swimmers in the practice domain; (2) validated measures of behavioural outcomes of non-regulated training; and (3) implemented and tested an applied self-monitoring intervention that was designed to minimize swimmers' non-regulated activity, and to promote swimmers' intent and confidence related to self-regulation during training.
