Gentile da Fabriano was celebrated in his own time as a major Italian painter whose work in Florence was his most productive and was working for one of the most wealthy men of his time. His famous altarpiece painted for Palla Strozzi's family burial chapel is one of the great masterpieces to survive from the fifteenth century. It is also a manifestation of the religious an social activities of the Strozzi family and yeilds for the first time in 600 years it symbolic secrets often misunderstood as showing off his mastery in painting subjects from nature. Those images are identified for the first time in many instances as are puzzling scenes of a horse bucking up in front of a log, a violent attack as a witness sits on a wicker chair overseeing a murder. More importantly the method by which a viewer can look and understand the iconography is presented for the first time in an essay, base on compositional hierarchies and the relevance of the altarpiece to the Vallombrosan fountain of San Giovanni Gualberto and the importance of the dedication of the church to the Holy Trinity for the Journey and Adoration of the Three Wise Men. Based on the iconography, Gentile's masterpiece is renamed the Strozzi Epiphany Altarpiece, with the added suggestion that the Confraternity of the Well, the Confraternity of the Magi all met in the newly built sacristy, its funerary crypt, as well as serving the larger church, also known since medieval times as "Jerusalem."
