Bidit, a twenty-something medical student finds his aspirations in spirituality, in Buddhist scriptures in particular, and at moments of trouble finds himself leaning towards them. And to good effect. In addition to his medical text-books and occasional outing and trip (once to India too) with his room-mate, Koshish, he also mediates and reads a lot about great Buddhist masters in his spare time. Out in village where he has a home, his mother Akansha and Dhankumar, who have been emotionally distant since Bidit's childhood, have had a turbulent marital relationship, brought about by their difficulty in financing his obviously expensive medical education, among other things. Yet they help him carry on with his studies despite their own relationship being in shambles.Bidit enjoys his medical school life and friends in particular. But being inherently introspective, and largely fueled by the Earthquake that hits his country Nepal, he also finds himself drawn to writing (as a craft). But, in truth, he is torn between being a diligent medical student and an aspirant writer. Furthermore, when his parents divorce and his mother moves to America, his writing skills (and soon a writing career) start to flourish and yet he struggles in passing out as a doctor. He does get successful in becoming a doctor eventually. But as he becomes a doctor instead of working as a doctor he pens few books that deem him early fame and success as an author. So, he commits to writing full-time and during this time courts an American girl, whom he later marries. Now, after his parents' divorce he is drawn more to spirituality and later conjures up ambitions of becoming a scientist--on a controversial research project: with all the help from an American scientist whom he accidentally meets out in Thamel, and who he later discovers his mother is now married to. Based on his marriage to a U.S citizen, Bidit also immigrates to U.S. But his marriage, just like his parents', turns out to be fretted with challenges.Yet he succeeds in his scientific "ambitions" . The one aspect of him becomes an Ascetic,a hermit, the other aspect a now-very famous writer and the third one enjoys a Grihasta or "homely" life in America, who enjoys both the troubles and joys of a family life. The latter aspect of him also reunites with his own mother in U.S. But unfortunately there is one aspect of the cloned self that turns into a killer. So, the story now centers on solely the actions and behaviors of this killer-aspect or cloned self of Bidit who goes to his homeland Nepal stays out in Nepal. As mentioned earlier, he has had an often tumultuous and arduous life with an early parental divorce, his ever-so-loving mother eloping to her lover in U.S, and the fact that his father is (and has been) distant and non-loving, add to his torments. So, he toils to escape the drudgery of his existence by reveling in numerous paramours, Vinni and Rinnu for instance, and he actually falls in love with one, but she leaves him for a better prospect--adding to his unrelenting tyranny. To bow out of such vexations, he wanders frequently about the streets of Kathmandu; and as he does that, he notices the beggars and poverty-stricken folks on the streets, and compares them--and their existence-- to his very own current life-circumstance, which is in a minor form of shambles. And not just that, he actually realizes that adulteration and disjointed conscience--in life, relationship, business and politics--has become the new norm in Nepal, yet he can do nothing about it. Thus, he makes an odyssey: in love, life and also as a perturbed onlooker of a nation's failed politics...And, his failures in love deems him neurotic and yes slightly psychotic for he indulges in endless self-talks...in attempts to bow out of his torments.
