But although he was educated in the art of healing human bodies, Marc finds he is lost when it comes to curing his wife's emotions, especially after a disastrous honeymoon and a riding accident leaves her confined to a wheelchair, bitter and full of self-pity. Summer hates the old house with its eleven-foot ceilings and dark hallways when she arrives at Calico Acres with Marc and their elderly housekeeper, Josephina, on a cold, snowy day in January. She's infuriated that her husband has brought her to an area of Wisconsin noted for ghostly hauntings, a place far from her doting parents.
