The "Greatest Hero" is the biography of the only soldier ever nominated for the Congressional Medal of Honor three different times for three distinct combat actions. The little known greatest hero is Sergeant Robert Lewis Howard, US Army Special Forces. He received every award for Valor an Army soldier can be awarded to include the Congressional Medal of Honor. He was wounded 14 times and was awarded eight Purple Hearts. He was then, and is today, the most highly decorated soldier/airman/sailor/marine in American History. During the Vietnam War, he was a member of an ultra-secret Army unit conducting daunting clandestine combat operations in the enemy's rear areas of Cambodia, Laos and North Vietnam. The operations involved small patrols and once inserted by helicopter into the enemy's rear areas they had no conventional military support such as friendly infantry or artillery. The patrols were alone and on their own. He and his comrades are unknown today because the government for generations denied the unit's existence / missions and at war's end directed all the unit's records be destroyed. Furthermore, the soldiers signed non disclosure affidavits swearing not to reveal the unit's missions. This book describes the daring combat operations of the soldiers of this unit and Sergeant Howard's 28 months of combat operations "over the fence." This is the only biography written about this amazing soldier's life. The book details his difficult childhood in Alabama and his Army career as he progressed from Private to Colonel. It also details his amazingly decision, after his first 12 years of Army service as a logistician, to make a radical career change and volunteer to join the Special Forces (SF). After a year of SF training, he volunteered for Vietnam duty with the ultra secret unit engaged in the most dangerous combat assignment of the war. The fighting was fierce and unforgiving of the slightest mistake as the enemy executed all of the unit's soldiers they captured. None of the unit's MIAs ever return. An example of the violent combat was Sergeant Howard's small reconnaissance company was awarded five Medals of Honor. The book has the endorsement of the Howard family and contains never before revealed documents from the National Archives describing Sergeant Howard's combat exploits. The book includes copies of all his valor award citations, and a verbatim account of a video of then Colonel Howard describing his MOH actions to the Congressional Medal of Honor Society. The book contains chapter endnotes verifying statements of fact, and a bibliography of over 100 references.
