Description

The History of Gladys Porter Zoo describes how a first class zoo came to be located in the southern tip of Texas, an area located far from the major population centers where most zoos are located. It is one of the few zoos int he country built entirely with private funding, made possible by the Earl C. Sams Foundation. This narrative describes his life, career and generosity. After his death, the foundation he created, headed by his daughter, Gladys Porter, funded many projects in South Texas. In the late 1960s, they made a decision to build a zoo. This volume describes the dedication and years of work by Gladys Porter and her colleagues dealing with the challenges of designing and building the facility, acquiring some 1,500 animals from around the world and getting the zoo into operation. This narrative describes the work of the zoo officers and staff, including stories about the people who work behind the scenes caring for the animals, and some of their interesting, challenging and bizarre experiences. The mission statement of the zoo describes it as "a visitor-oriented zoological and botanical park, dedicated to the preservation of nature through education, conservation and research." This narrative describes how the zoo has worked to fulfill those goals.
