I.T. is defined here as the convergence of computing and telecommunications to produce systems which can acquire, process, store, retrieve and disseminate vocal, graphical, pictorial, textual and numerical information, reliably, quickly and efficiently. Stage 1 of the project provides a general overview of IT in the health service and gives an indication in general terms of the likely future impact of IT work in physical and organisational terms. The purpose of stage 2 of the project and this report is to move down to a further level of detail and explore the likely impact of IT more specifically as it may affect the organisation and design of particular hospital departments as well as the hospital as a whole. The information gathered as the basis for this report was collected using an interview approach. Information collated caried from the speculative to the more specific, not surprisingly in an area such as the health service which is some way behind in terms of both what is technologically possible and what is realistically attainable.
