Massachusetts, April 1775. The colonies are torn between those wanting independence from England and those who are loyal to the king. Dan Kelly pulled himself up from the poor section of Boston to ownership of a bookstore. He is a Patriot and wants liberty even though he knows the conflict could easily cost him his business, and his life. Erin Kelly, Dan's wife and business partner, is a Loyalist and argues that both the colonies and England are stronger if they stay united. Asa Kelly, Dan's cousin and best friend, is a farmer, hunter and the best knife thrower in the area. He too is a Patriot and is certain he can handle any British soldiers who come his way. No one expects war to come so suddenly. Asa is drawn into the bloody fighting on Battle Road as the British return to Boston after leaving Lexington and Concord. He joins his militia as they take part in the siege of Boston. Dan and Erin are trapped in Boston during the siege. They must find a way to save their business and somehow get out of the city. They all take their parts in the upheaval of the first days of the American Revolutionary War, leading to the showdown, in mid-June, of the Battle of Bunker Hill.
