ON THE SHOEES OF THE FEOZEN OCEAN., hen Frank went on deck next morning, he found the vessel standing southward with all her sails furled before a strong gale of wind, which kept the floating ice always about them, though they'could see that the sea before them was much more free from ice than it was to windward. On this course they continued ah day, and as the last gleam of the brief sunshine faded from the sky, Frank saw the captain pointing southward, and, quickly gazing in that direction, perceived a long undulating line of white that was distinctly defined for a few minutes between the sea and the sky, and then was lost in the fast-gathering gloom of night. With the rising sun they beheld before them a long ridge of low hills covered with snow, their whitened summits sharply denned against the slate-coloured sky, blushing into rose where they caught the upward beams of the glowing luminary of day, and shaded into grey on their western slopes. The bluish grey of the waves was varied with the white masses of floating ice between the ship and the land; and in every other direction, far as the eye could reach, was a vast field of ice, piled up by the wind and the waves at all angles to the horizon. Slowly the barque was brought nearer to the land, and at noon was moored with grapnels on the edge of a thick sheet of ice that had closed up a creek. The hills had receded from view as the frost-bound ship was steered towards them, and were now seen to be a considerable distance from the coast, rising gradually from a dreary waste of snow, dotted here and there with a stunted and leafless pine.
