He had escaped the war but not his conscience Having survived the hell of Stalingrad, after two years of bitter fighting on the Eastern Front, Sergeant Franz Mayer was now a deserter. Not by choice it has to be said but a reality nevertheless. With the prospect of facing an SS firing squad, convinced that the war was lost he knew his only hope of survival lay in somehow finding his way back to Germany. Aided by an elderly couple who had lost their only son in the war, he is finally able to return to his family. But once there after witnessing the forcible conscription of young boys and old men, plagued by his conscience he knew he must return to the war. Before leaving, he writes a letter to the old couple who had saved his life, asking his wife to post it should he not return.
