These 2 volumes tell the story of a very colorful man who lived in an exciting time in Europe. Friedrich Freiherr von der Trenck was an 18th century Prussian officer, adventurer and writer. One year after joining the army he was imprisoned. It is unclear whether the imprisonment was due to an affair with Princess Anna Amalia, the younger sister of the king, or it was because of the relation with his cousin Franz Freiherr von der Trenck, who served in Austria. In 1746 he escaped from the fortress in Glatz and left for Hungry. In 1753 Frederick II again imprisoned him and ten years later he was released by the orders of Empress Maria Theresa. During the next decade he was kept busy writing literature, running a wine trading business, and traveling to England and France. Austria sent von der Trench as an observer of the events of the French Revolution. In Paris he was accused of being a spy and executed by the guillotine in 1794, two days before the fall of Robes Pierre and the end of the Terror.
