Bob Dole was a World War II hero, who enlisted in the Army's Enlisted Reserve Corps in December, 1942, a year after the United States formally joined World War II. In 1943, he was inducted into active duty and commissioned as second lieutenant after Officer Candidate School. While he was in combat in April, 1945, shortly before the end of World War II, he was seriously wounded near Castel d'Aiano in the Apennines mountains in Bologna, Italy. He suddenly discovered that he was unable to feel anything below his neck. He was unaware at the time that whatever it was that hit him had shattered his shoulder and right arm, damaging part of his spine. The injuries he sustained left him with numbness in the left arm and restricted mobility in his right arm. Bob Dole was also an American politician who served as a member of the United States Senate representing Kansas from 1969 until 1996 and sought for the presidency through the Republican Party in 1996 but lost to Bill Clinton.
