He was educated at the University of Glasgow and Oxford. He was a classical scholar, a linguist and a lawyer. He wrote literary criticism, but he is known today for this memoir of Scott, which is widely considered second only to Boswell's biography of Johnson. Within these two volumes he provides meticulous details on the life and work of the great Scottish novelist.
