When young, beautiful, and soon-to-be-published university student, Rese Goddard, commits suicide, everyone who knew her found it impossible to believe, and it seems that, six months later, someone still doesn't believe it. That someone keeps calling the Owen's Park police department, insisting that, if the police can find it, a journal exists that will prove Rese was murdered. Officer Matt Linkous has clear orders after the state police also receive a number of the mysterious calls: "Find her journal."Rese's family doesn't believe she killed herself either. Kathy Morris refuses to believe her daughter would take her own life, and she calls private investigator, Cass McKenzie, to scrutinize the police investigation to see if the case had any flaws.Rese's younger sister, Amanda, has more than doubts that her sister committed suicide. The day she died, Rese mailed her sister a manuscript, a collection of short stories titled The Litmus Test, scheduled to be published as the winner of a writing contest. Amanda might be the only person left alive who knows the collection of stories exists. She hasn't told her mother, Kathy, about the manuscript, and she has her reasons. Cass agrees to take the case and the unpublished manuscript even as the dead woman's sister insists, "I think this book got her killed." As Matt and Cass separately immerse themselves in Rese's world via her writings, their investigations draw them together. When they compare their readings, his of the journals and hers of the stories, a picture of the dead woman's life emerges, and the conclusion of suicide becomes harder to believe. For one thing, Rese Goddard was happy at the time of death. In addition to winning the contest, she had found love in a person that had freed her to be herself ... Who killed themselves under those circumstances? For Rese's friend and mentor, Lillian Walsh, news that Rese's book of stories is complete - and has been found - gives her the chance to honor Rese's life by seeing the book published. But if Amanda is right about her sisters 'manuscript, why would Rese's stories inspire someone to kill her, and who else might be in danger? As a publication date gets nearer, and Matt and Cass close in on the truth, another person close to Rese is found dead. Only the truth can stop the killer, but can Cass and Matt find it before it's too late?
