The defeat of the Japanese on the Malayan peninsula during World War II was an important part of re-claiming lost territory for the Allies and is recognised to be a key turning point in the war in the Far East. This book covers just one small, but fascinating, operation carried out by RAF 240 Squadron together with the Allies' secretive Special Operations Executive (SOE) which, without doubt, helped the Allies to recapture Malaya and Singapore from the Japanese in 1945.This well-researched monograph on Operation Oatmeal tells the story of how a skilled RAF crew delivered a Malayan intelligence team from the SOE base in Ceylon to just off the shores of Japanese-occupied northern Malaya one midnight in September 1944. The SOE mission was led by Captain Ibrahim bin Ismail, a native Malayan who was trained by the British and was working for the SOE's Far Eastern branch, Force 136. Unfortunately, the team was captured by the Japanese shortly after landing in northern Malaya. However, whilst being held prisoner by the Japanese army in Burma, Ismail managed to pass on information to the Allies for the next ten months by tricking and convincing his captors that he was, in fact, working for them and not the Allies. "The Longest Flight" refers to the two gruelling trips made by the two RAF Catalina flying boat crews - a record total of around 6,000 miles - in the space of 2 days. The detailed account of preparations and the flights themselves are told through the verbatim personal accounts of some members of the RAF crews (one of whom was the author's father) and by Ismail. The book then goes to tell the subsequent thrilling tale of deception by Captain Ismail and his small team. Photographs and maps help to illustrate the action and bring the main characters to life. In 1944 the RAF crews had all been kept in total ignorance of who they were carrying and why and were never officially told of the mission's outcome. Appendices to the book go on to relate the intriguing story of how two members of the lead Catalina crew, did finally learn, by pure chance, about the successful outcome of their brave team effort on those two exhausting days some 50 years earlier.
