Jean Newton McIlwraith/ M'Ilwraith (1859-1938), who also wrote under the pseudonym Jean Forsyth, was educated at the Hamilton Ladies' College and by correspondence courses from Queen Margaret College, Glasgow University. In 1902 she moved to New York, where she worked as a publisher's reader and was for some time head reader for Doubleday, Page and Company; McIlwraith continued to publish articles in periodicals such as Cornhill, Country Life, Harper's, and Canadian Magazine, as well as books. The first-person narrator of this short novel is a middle-aged journalist, David Gemmell, who portrays himself as the victim of his wife's eccentricities-which include theosophy, "society, " good works, and Mary, an orphan girl she befriends. Her works include: Ptarmigan (1895), A Book About Shakespeare (1898), Canada (1899), The Span o' Life (1899), A Book About Longfellow (1900), The Curious Career of Roderick Campbell (1901), Sir Frederick Haldimand (1904), A Diana of Quebec (1912), The Little Admiral (1924) and Kinsmen at War (1927).
