The Pocket Book was originally written in 1980 by Ralph Wilson (by a fluke, his Initials and surname were used rather than just the name Ralph Wilson), a practising meat inspector who, during a time when he had had some students working with him found that there was some kind of need for a simple working Pocketbook to give some advice to future potential meat inspectors and hygienists. As it happened, at that time, the inspector who wrote it was the honorary editor of his Associations magazine, 'The Meat Hygienist'. From there it appeared to him for it to sensibly be titled, 'The Meat Hygienists Pocket Book' and that he should, after receiving the permission of his Association, get the book published for others to be able to use it.That was the first edition in 1981 and by 1986, due to some changes in some aspects of regulations and practices he had been asked to consider providing a second edition. That was done also and it too proved to be quite popular with working inspectors. By 1999 he had found that he had less personal interest in continuing in that field of work himself but felt that for the Association to make the best use of it he would formally donate the copyright for the book to The Association. That he then thought was it. He had written the book. It had sold well (on both editions) providing some revenue for the Association and he had donated the copyright. That inspector of old was now retired but was approached and asked if he would work with some of his old friends to put together a third edition. This book then is the third edition, ably assisted by Ian Robinson (who had until recently been the General Secretary of the Association). It had always been the intention to complete the book by producing either an extension to this book or indeed a separate book to cover those who deal with poultry meats and game. The separate book is yet to be completed but we all feel sure that it too will be welcomed by many Hygienists in their work. Please do feel free to follow the progress of the Association of Meat Inspectors and if any comments or remarks are needed to help with any future editions, do please contact the Association whose address can be found quite easily on Internet websites.
