This is a literary publication including poems and art created and put together by the 2017-2018 eighth grade community at the Monarch Academy Public Charter School, Glen Burnie, MD. Each student wrote a poem, some of which appear in our book, based on our experiences and learning throughout our Fall Expedition: Are You An Agent Of Change? We investigated subjects, such as The Holocaust, both World Wars, the Industrial Revolution, and the Rwandan Genocide. Throughout the year, we had the honor of having special guests come in and share their personal stories that connected to what we had been learning about during our learning expedition, including: Mr. Carl Wilkens, Mrs. Veronica Kestenberg, Mrs. Martha Wieman, and Femi The Drifish. We read about kinds of poetry and poetic devices leading up to our writing, to fully understand the process of poetry writing. Our mission is to tell the stories of those who were affected in these life-changing events and give them a poetic voice. We strive to speak our minds in telling stories that move us. We hope that by reading these poems you can help keep the stories of those in the past, with us in the present. Next time you make a choice, think about how you can effect, be an agent, of change. Everyone can think about changing the world, doing something astonishing in the unforeseen future. We must learn to see the past and stop any mistakes from the past repeating in our futures. We may be children or teens, but this book is letting us encourage our thoughts, making sure we spread the words of the past, showing you our world, and of those that were once screaming in silence. We the Eighth grade team of 2018, welcome you to The Memories That Made Us.
