This true story takes place at the transition from the last century to the current one and traces the experience of a man, then at the height of his career with the Serious Fraud Office. He is brought down by an extremely uncommon and life-threatening neurological condition a week after receiving the news that his father has been diagnosed with terminal cancer. The story tells how his job is frozen while he succumbs to the devastating progression of the Miller Fisher syndrome. Over the course of six weeks he lies in hospital unable to control his body's steady decline until, with care, it starts to climb out of the darkness and little by little he begins to regain his muscular capabilities. There is also the mental anguish of being separated from his family but through it all his wife, the real heroine of the story, visits him every day. They celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary with him propped up against his hospital bed holding onto her whom he cannot see. Within a few hours he suffers a seizure which he later learns has left him with impaired cognitive powers. A the end of the six weeks at three hospitals he is reunited with his family and has to learn how to walk, talk and deal with the complex issues of life once again. He immediately visits his father who has undergone major surgery to remove the cancer but he never regains consciousness and dies a week later, without seeing his son. Six months after the onset of the illness he returns to part-time work in his old job but before long is back working extended hours. He and his wife decide to buy a small house in France to provide a relaxing distraction from the enormous pressures that start to build again as the high profile case he is working on progresses to trial. He finds it impossible to comply with a higher workload imposed through Government spending cuts and retires to a life less fulfilling and regrets being starved of the input that keeps an investigator satisfied.
