Munro's family legacy is the American Dream incarnated. Alexander McKenzie Munro was just 12 in the late 19th century when he began helping build a castle in the Scottish Highlands, earning a few shillings a week. He was enamored with the wild west he'd read about in newspapers, a place where "property was free, jobs were plentiful and the citizens could actually vote in every election." Ancestors Alexander McKenzie Munro and Janet Montgomery were brave enough to travel the oceans to seek a new life. It is the history of early Kitsap County, when Bainbridge Island and Bremerton were interconnected with a network of passenger ferries known as the Mosquito Fleet. Ralph Munro, a beloved retired politician who served five terms as Washington's secretary of state, learned to swim at the Bremerton YMCA. His father, George, bought furniture at Bill Gates Sr.'s gallery on Pacific Avenue, and his uncles lived in a tent in Manette. Many members of his family worked in the dry docks of the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard. Today, Bainbridge Island is a more distant neighbor to the Bremerton area, geographically and socioeconomically, than it was when Ralph Munro grew up off Bainbridge's Crystal Springs Drive. It was from that Crystal Springs perch that Munro's grandparents raised 10 children of their own all while watching Kitsap County come of age. The family joined those in the shipyard and the Navy, helping win two world wars and usher in the nation, as well as the county, we know today. --Adapted from Amazon.com and KitsapSun.com.
