Having secured a number of Mexican visas for refugee intellectuals in order to attend an arts festival she spent a year in Mexico, before moving back to New York in 1942. The memoir, published here for the first time, is fascinating. Not only for its testimony of escape but also as an account of the last day of the life of the celebrated philosopher and literary critic Walter Benjamin. It provides additional corroborative detail of the circumstances surrounding Benjamin's last journey, as well as his state of mind during the last night of his life. It shows the desperate plight of the refugees, the corruption of Spanish border officials, as well as providing fresh information on the suicide of Walter Benjamin.
