This novel, The New Native Born is a fiction, written to remind us and enlighten our children and the entire world about the rich cultural and traditional activities of the Ijaw people. The author was inspired by the occurrences in his society, the Niger Delta Region of Nigeria. And those from the region could relate with some of the realities of the story when they read through the pages of the novel. The birth of Tobo was marked with several traditional and cultural celebrations in Ebiama village of Akita Kingdom. As Tobo began to grow up, he was challenged by his parents and his grandmother, to follow the path of greatness, toughness, fearlessness and fairness. And as Tobo followed that path, he collided with a strong, heartless and unforgiving son of a rich man, who was ready to fight and oppose him with the very last drop of his blood. The people of Akita Kingdom, who were once a peaceful and sociable people, united by the bond of love and unity were suddenly confronted by the ugly face of violence, brutality and hostility. The setting, characters and conflicts are used to portray the beliefs, traditions, cultures and events in the society. They are also used to underscore some of the elements that had contributed to the violence and hostility in some parts of the Niger Delta region. The novel captures occurrences before the Independence Era to the Modern Era. It also explores some of the fundamental cultural and traditional activities of the Ijaw people, which includes; farming, fishing, wrestling, hunting, dancing, and other cultural ceremonies. A careful study of the novel will unveil the rich cultural heritage of the Ijaw people. However, ironically, all these rich cultural heritage are being buried under the guise of civilization. The novel is historical, educative and informative. It is captivating and thrilling, full of suspense. It has a very unique narrative technique. The language of the novel is simple. It can be read and understood by both children and adults.
