Author James Thompson describes the next new Thomas Jefferson as "a partisan intriguer who conducted and eventually won the Second American Revolution." Thompson opens his narrative with descriptions of the seven "new" Jeffersons who have been introduced since the man died in 1826. He notes that four have been created during the information age by public and private agents using media campaigns to shape public opinion. Franklin Roosevelt unveiled the fourth new Jefferson on the 200th anniversary of his birth. Roosevelt's "Apostle of Freedom" was a "leader in the philosophy of government, education, the arts, and in efforts to lighten the toil of mankind." He was also the face for a social revolution FDR called "the New Deal." Civic humanists invented the fifth new Thomas Jefferson twenty-five years later. This iconic "Father of Human Rights" led their campaign to eradicate social injustice everywhere in the world. As Americans were learning to admire this visionary social reformer, a sixth new Thomas Jefferson burst past him. So unpopular has the father of Sally Hemings's children become that some faculty members at the university he founded want his statue removed from it grounds.Thompson agrees that this last new Jefferson should be replaced. The same for the philosophe Merrill Peterson invented in 1960. In their place, Thompson presents a Wizard-of-Oz-like character who, from beyond a veil of disinterest, labored to subvert Alexander Hamilton and his forward-looking system.Regarding the father of his slave's children, Thompson identifies Sally Hemings's older brother James as the original source of this rumor. This adds authenticity to reports that Jefferson had a relationship with his wife's half-sister, but, Thompson explains, Jefferson's tight social networks made it virtually impossible for him to conduct the sexual affair that forms the center of the current controversy. Foreseeing the day science proves whether Jefferson fathered any or all of Sally Hemings's children, Thompson leaves the matter until then.Though imperfect and unphilosophical, Thompson's next new Jefferson is still important because he participated in several revolutions that made the world modern, and he made notable contributions to many of them.
