Description

"On July 7, 2003, a painting entitled, 'Breaking Home Ties' was placed on exhibition in the Norman Rockwell Museum in Stockbridge, Massachusetts. The placard next to the painting proclaimed it to be a masterpiece by America's favorite artist, Norman Rockwell, and was being shown to the public for 'the first time in forty years.' Two weeks later, the portrait artist, John Howard Sanden visited the exhibit and immediately proclaimed the painting a fraud. The painting, defended by museum officials and experts, continued to be exhibited for three years, while Sanden mounted a letter-writing and Internet campaign to have it removed or relabeled as 'by artist unknown.' The objections by artist Sanden proved accurate, the original masterpiece was found hidden in an empty house in Vermont (where the painting had been secreted inside a false wall for thirty-plus years), and was sold at auction at Sotheby's in New York for fifteen million dollars. The fascinating twists and turns of this unique story are told here, profusely illustrated." -- Back cover.
