When Ex-FBI agent turned wealth advisor, David Blum, returns to Illinois for his father's funeral, he's haunted by the memories of the strained relationship he had with the somewhat melancholy and distant man. But then, Blum finds a note in a condolence card asking him to meet in a campus bar so he can learn "what really happened" to his father. The man fails to show for the meeting, and Blum, already suspicious of the circumstances surrounding his father's death, begins his own search for the truth-one that leads him to the university research center of Otto Feldmann, a world-renowned professor of genetics and past acquaintance of his father's. Digging further, Blum surfaces an old newspaper story about Kay Westfield, a high school student who witnessed a bizarre explosion on Feldmann's experimental farm years earlier. Blum tracks down Westfield, now a charming bank executive. As the two work together to untangle the labyrinth of funding behind Feldmann's supposedly humanitarian research, a picture soon emerges of a monstrous plot to distribute a deadly virus, aided somehow by the calculations of Victor Lawson, a genius computer programmer with past ties to a violent, white supremacist organization. When Blum is discovered breaking into Feldmann's office one night, he flees into the clutches of a mysterious team that has been following him since he arrived in town. Realizing their goals are the same, the team agrees to let him join them as long as he promises to remain strictly an observer. Blum reluctantly agrees, but when he witnesses one of their agents being kidnapped he defies orders and gives chase. The rescue attempt drags him into the depths of Feldmann's nightmare greenhouse where, in a final confrontation, he learns that Feldmann's plan, backed by a shadowy international think tank, is ultimately more profound than anything he'd imagined, forcing him to question his own sense of morality. Just when Blum thinks he's come out on top, a surprise twist turns his world upside down and sends him on a new path in life-one that would have finally made his father proud of him.
