A young detective, Homer Shellock, is hired by the Pinnelboro police department. He takes part in the investigation of a killing, which has taken place at the grounds if the Love of Life Assembly. He arrives at a logical scheme leading to the crime, which is quite different from that pursued by his superior. His boss, Conkline, is a member of the Love of Life Assembly. The basis for his approach to the crime is his desire to keep the involvement of the church to a minimum, whereas Shellock sees an alternate and more logical sequence of events than the path the prosecution is pursuing. The actions take place in 1970 in Pinnelboro County, which houses the headquarters of The Love of Life Assembly. At the time of the killing, this organization has changed somewhat since its started in 1967. It has become quite adamant about concepts such as bigamy and female subservience, and it permits intimacies with and between minors. But it also has an apparent good side in that it has an outreach program where prostitutes are converted to the Assembly's branch of Christianity. Shellock is eventually fired, but during the trial a surprise shows the prosecution's depiction of the killing to be false and vindicates Shellock's conclusions. Shellock is not a member of the Love of Life Assembly. The book describes Shellock's simultaneous love for three women, and in this manner his own life seems to mimic the teachings of the Love of Life Assembly. However, one of the women (Cassandra Priam) maintains that if a man can have several wives, why can't a woman have many husbands? In a manner of speaking she arrives at a solution to this dilemma.
