I have always enjoyed reading books that contain a mystery that I want to know the answer to, characters that I care about and feel like I have lost my friends when the book ends but also to finish a book and feel I have learned something new. These factors I took into consideration while researching, writing and redrafting this book. Basically, I have attempted to write the type of book that I enjoy reading. The initial inspiration for this story was the strange legend relating to St Cuthbert, whose remains can be found in Durham Cathedral. It was discovered after several exhumations over hundreds of years that his body had not decomposed. This, I find is a fascinating story and whatever your take on the believability of this, fact is that many people went on pilgrimage to visit his shrine and professed themselves cured of illness. St Cuthbert was the most important Saint in the North of England. When I discovered an obscure article entitled 'The Nature Goddess Silk at Durham' by J.F.Flanagan, it drew my attention to the fact that St Cuthbert's coffin had originally contained a beautiful silken cloth bearing the image of a goddess almost certainly not Mary. It got me thinking. This was certainly no traditional Christian symbolism. So what was it doing in St Cuthbert's coffin? Also, before the Synod of Whitby in 664 A.D., the North of Britain followed a form of Celtic Christianity which encompassed many of the old pagan ways, was related to nature and women's role within it was of equal importance to men's. So maybe this goddess silk was the reason for his corpse remaining intact. As it seemed that when it disappeared at some point, Cuthbert's body began to decompose. But maybe it vanished because someone stole it? What would be the effect on them? The character Scire, in the story, was handed the cloth by his grandfather Leofwin five hundred years ago and had remained physically unchanged since then. Of course, once this becomes known to other people, they too want to become 'Keeper of the Cloth'. The story is about: greed and desire for the silk, wanting to cheat death, tenacious revenge, enduring friendship, the need to belong to a group and all that that entails, and a yearning for simpler times. I have set the tale in Tyneside where I have lived for many years but also in the North West where I grew up and Lancaster University where I studied at roughly the same time as the book. It switches between the years 1979, 1999 and 2009. Also, as the character Derrick sets up a sect hearkening back to the day of St Cuthbert and pagan Christianity so the characters elect to give themselves Celtic names and participate in ancient rituals under the authoritarian leadership of Derrick or Dafo as he elects to be known.
