Kevin's spirits soar when his mother marries Hank McGuffy. At last, the preteen feels, he has a father to do son stuff with. But, after he moves to Hank's thoroughbred horse ranch, he feels like an overweight wimp who also knows nothing about racehorses or the rules governing their safety. Hank is too busy to teach him. Worse, Hank thinks that Kevin is lazy and a quitter. The foreman's son, Todd, slightly older than Kevin, is a whiz with horses and rebuffs Kevin's first attempt at friendship. Rosie Sanchez does befriend Kevin, and adds some pepper and fun to his life. Kevin gets his chance to contribute to the ranching operation when Hank's favorite mare dies just after foaling. Kevin becomes the feeding surrogate mother of the orphaned foal, Black Diamond. But when Rosie and Todd prank Kevin by hiding Black Diamond, Hank blames Kevin for leaving the gate open and allowing the colt to roam. Kevin is in trouble again. Fortunately, Kevin nabs the prank-playing culprits and is vindicated. However, several weeks later, the colt's disappearance is very real. With help from Rosie and Todd, Kevin rescues Black Diamond and earns his step-father's trust and respect. Along the way he discovers that Hank has always admired his intelligence. As Kevin becomes more active, ranch life and better eating habits melt the fat off him. With a more active body and a mind-set more open, outgoing and positive, Kevin's self-esteem is on the rise.
