Description

Several variables have been identified as risk factors for depressive symptoms, including temperament and cognitive vulnerabilities. However, empirical results have been mixed when examining such factors among youth. Few studies have investigated the integration of these risk factors among child and adolescent populations, and there has been limited consideration of risk factors from a developmental perspective (Garber, Weiss, & Shanley, 1993). This study examined the relationship between negative cognitions (i.e., negative cognitive triad and dysfunctional attitudes), temperament (i.e., BIS and BAS), and negative life events to depressive symptoms among American Indian (AI) youth grades 4 through 12 (N = 324). Results indicate that negative life events, negative cognitive triad, and to a lesser extent dysfunctional attitudes were significantly associated with depressive symptoms. Low BAS was associated with depressive symptoms only for older AI youth (grades 7-12). Path analysis models offered support for a post hoc mediational model for both younger (grades 4-6) and older children (grades 7-12) and a post hoc moderational model, in which temperament (i.e., low BAS) interacted with negative cognitions among older children (grades 7-12). Overall, these findings provide support for the examination of integrated and developmental models of depressive vulnerability among AI youth.
