The ReverendBy D.H. Robbins "The Reverend " is a suspense / crime novel set in New York City in 1963 - 1964. It centers around Reverend Thomas Barragan-Deavers, who carries out his murders under the name of "Chamelea". Thomas is gender-conflicted, as he was raised as a girl during his childhood in 1920s Ireland by his over-bearing mother. Now as a 43-year old, he has conditioned himself to seek his feminine nature through gaining his female victim's trust, to then kill them. He is directed to take their lives through his imagined personal God's will for him to become whole. He embraces his victims at the moment of their death to allow their souls to nurture his yearn to sanctify himself as a woman.Thomas is bi-sexual and has been married (to a woman he later murdered-his first "conquest" ), and has a 21-year-old-estranged daughter, Regina. Naturally, her childhood has been compromised by Thomas. She finds a job at the 1964 World's Fair in New York, and Thomas disguises himself as Regina's departed mother and finds her, much to her horror. Detective Ray Nealy and Marty Cohanson, a New York City cop, try to track Chamelea (Thomas) through each of his murders. Thomas remains one step ahead, until, finally, he takes one too many lives and slips up. Now, for Ray and Marty, it becomes personal.
