This book is an exploration of the life and times of Irish convict John Best in Van Diemen's Land. The story begins in August, 1817 in County Westmeath, Ireland. John Best, a native of Kinnegad , and his brother-in-law, George White, appeared at the Trim assizes where they were found guilty of 'burglary and robbery'. It's unclear whether both men were involved in the same crime or whether they committed separate crimes. Each received a life sentence including transportation to a penal settlement in the colony of New South Wales. At the time, John and his wife, Mary, had four young children. George White and his wife Bridget (sister to John Best) had three young children at that time. All were ordinary rural Irish people. As convicts, John and George were transported aboard the ship Minerva to Port Jackson, New South Wales and then on to Van Diemen's Land. John was about 35 years old and George was about 30. John was not a young man going by the average life span for those times. A contemporary observer may have thought John had lived the greater part of his life by then. John must have possessed a strong survival spirit, as his transportation marked a point when the second half of his life was to begin. At the time of his conviction, he couldn't have known what an up and down ride he and his family were destined to experience on the other side of the world.
