Description

The Alcohol and Other Drugs Council of Australia has identified attracting and recruiting staff as a problem area for the sector. An obvious strategy is to recruit people from a broad range of backgrounds, and then provide specific industry training. The vocational education and training (VET) sector is well placed to provide this training. The potential of VET to play this role was tested through surveys of managers of alcohol and other drugs service agencies and analysis of student enrolment data. This study indicates that the VET sector has the potential to play a similar role in the alcohol and other drugs sector--not only in providing entry-level qualifications and ongoing training, but also in providing higher-level qualifications at the diploma level. Moreover, VET has untapped potential to provide qualifications at the vocational graduate certificate level, which would meet the need for more complex in-depth training and alternative articulation pathways. However, the current study identified relatively high levels of dissatisfaction with VET that may negatively influence its potential to meet the workforce development needs of this important health-related sector. Overcoming this barrier and enhancing the potential of VET may require more effective linkages between the alcohol and other drugs and VET sectors in conjunction with a range of other strategies to improve the quality of training provided. Appropriate resourcing and sufficient support from key players would make this a feasible endeavour. (Contains 11 tables and 4 footnotes.)
