Six friends went into the water. But only five came back.Disgraced former FBI Agent Gavin Larson has been given a second lease on life, appointed to head up the new Office of Special Investigations for U.S. Naval Intelligence, looking into cases all the other federal agencies can't-or won't-take on. This time, though, the mission is personal, if seemingly minor. A routine missing person report. Except that the person missing happens to be the heir to a billion dollar fortune. And his boss's godchild. The investigation starts off innocuous enough, just a small group of good friends sharing good times and reliving old memories. For the past ten years, four teammates from a state championship high school football team have gathered on Cozumel Island to celebrate the now-fading highlights of their equally faded youth. This year they brought along their girlfriends and wives to join the non-stop party, and Trevor, the record setting quarterback who flamed out in college but went on to make millions as a stockbroker, splurged a good chunk of those earnings on a multi-million-dollar 67-foot catamaran to house them all offshore for the week. A surging tropical storm threatens to shorten their trip, however, so six members of the little scuba club decide to squeeze in one last dive. And a night dive, at that. Two of the girlfriends chicken out and stay behind on the boat, while their boyfriends join the other two couples, leaping out into the water and quickly sinking 60 feet beneath the ocean's surface. Next to an underwater cliff that drops off another half mile to the ocean's floor. The dive lasts less than an hour, but when the group finally gathers to return to the surface, a quick headcount reveals that one of the divers is missing. Was it all just a tragic accident? Or was it murder?
