This is the Second Edition of a definitive semi-technical book related to the biology and conservation of the sea turtles that live in the nearby waters and nest on the beaches of Southwest Florida. Originally published as, The Loggerhead Turtle in the Eastern Gulf of Mexico, this edition has been updated to include more information about the biology and ecology of the four other species of sea turtles that share the marine environment and have life histories that in many ways are similar to that of the loggerhead turtle. This book details the results of a 30-year study on Sanibel and Captiva islands and which extended to many other of the barrier island chain along the Southwest Florida coast. Sea turtle biology, ancestry, taxonomy, physiology, diet, reproductive behavior, embryological development, and survival problems are some of the subjects discussed. Conservation biology has played an important role in safe-guarding the survival of the Endangered and Threatened sea turtles of the Gulf of Mexico. Long-term conservation efforts on the beaches of Southwest Florida have had positive results and have had a primary role in the recovery of the region's sea turtles. The historical aspects of this work are fully covered in this book as are many of the author's personal experiences as he contributed nearly a lifetime of effort and has seen his work and that of others become a success. This book contains a variety of superb images including photographs, original drawings, maps, and graphics rendered by Warren Boutchia and Mary Lou Schadt. Noted turtle specialist, Dr. Peter Pritchard wrote the Introduction.
