Description

A fictional account of Sergeant Ed Mason during & after World War II. Mason, from farm country in southern Illinois enlists in the army after Pearl Harbor, goes through boot camp, becomes a sergeant & is wounded in action in Europe. In many respects his experiences parallel those of the author, Sergeant Erwin Thompson who received the Purple Heart & Silver Star for his own part in the war. The book is in three parts: training camp; a brief episode in Europe during the war; & a third part dealing with the readjustment to civilian life after the war, working as a gas pipefitter in a small town in Illinois. Readers ranging form adolescent to adult have enjoyed the clear story line full of action & romance. Of interest to historians of labor may be the detailed descriptions of the farm & gas work the author knows so well. The readjustment to civilian life shows, sometimes in painful detail, the emotional & physical cost of the war to those who fought it. The book may be ordered from Julia Thompson, 5872 Ellsworth Ave., Pittsburgh, PA 15232.
