A real estate mogul bribes politicians and razes historic buildings to clear the way for repulsive high-rises in the 1970s. Acolytes in the media fawn over him. He is constantly in the news and brags about hiring "the best people." Donald Trump? No, it's Seymour Solomon, and a reporter named Jon Stone is on his tail in this 2009 novel. Stone is a smalltimer - hardly a Woodward or Bernstein - with big challenges. His editor is among Sy Solomon's most devoted friends, and on top of everything else, Solomon comes with his share of grays, as opposed to being a pure black hat. He is the biggest philanthropist in the Washington Jewish community. Antisemitism in DC is far more muted than today, but Stone still feels queasy about the damage that a Solomon expose could cause. Then a Solomon highrise collapses, and Stone must decide how to respond. The novel doesn't stop there but has a fictional afterwords on the Solomon scandals' ramifications more than a century later. Written in a hardboiled style and satirical in places, The Solomon Scandals is fiction, but was partly inspired by real events. The author, David H. Rothman, an OpEd News contributor, worked as an investigative reporter; his exposes of corruption at the General Services Administration led to a congressional investigation into federal office building leasing practices. First hardback edition, 2023.
