In this third novel about the sheriff of a Kansas town, the story centers around the death of a female Pinkerton by train robbers. The pursuit by two lawmen--Luke Atwell, a recently-appointed federal deputy marshal, and Jesse Markam, the current sheriff and former deputy of Planting--is both a quest for justice and for retribution. While tracking down each member of the divided outlaw gang, the marshal and sheriff deal with attacks on a remote trading post, Indians threatening a Catholic mission, a half-breed hired to kill them, a thwarted stagecoach theft and a bank-robbing theater group. Meanwhile, Peter Briggs, the in-charge deputy of Planting, faces challenges of his own including a clash with a corrupt former sheriff tracking down a family responsible for his arrest, phony boxers setting up a gambling ruse, and a murderer attacking women. Relationships are a part of the story as each of the main characters experience change--pleasurable and heart breaking. In the final chase, one of the lawmen suffers a life-threatening injury and the race to save his life involves all the main characters.
